Recommended books

A list of books that I would recommend for use in math courses or for supplementary reading.
  1. How to Think Like a Mathematician: A Companion to Undergraduate Mathematics

A very readable and engaging book for an introductory course in proofs. Inexpensive enough for a student to purchase as a supplement to a theoretical math course.

  2. An Introduction to Mathematical Reasoning

Another fine text or supplement on introduction to proofs. A bit more formal than Houston's, but very readable. I've used both texts (in different semesters). Cambridge University Press provides affordable, and well-written, alternatives to advanced textbook offerings from the big 3 publishers in the US.

  3. Creative Mathematics. H.S. Wall (Classroom Resource Materials) (Mathematical Association of America Textbooks)

A fine supplement to help guide students through the process of thinking mathematically. Has a place in a math teacher education program or for in-service training. Also great for the independent student.
